Day 16: Christmas Science – Melting Ice

Science can be magical at Christmas! Today’s activity lets children “rescue” small toys trapped in ice. It’s a hands-on way to explore freezing and melting.

✂️ What You’ll Need:

  • Small toys (e.g. mini figures or beads)

  • Ice cube tray

  • Water

  • Freezer

  • Salt or warm water in bowls

  • Spoons, droppers, or syringes

📝 Instructions:

1. Place small toys into the ice cube tray compartments.

2. Fill with water and freeze overnight.

3. Pop out the ice cubes and put them in a tray or bowl.

4. Challenge children to “rescue” the toys by melting the ice with salt or warm water.

5. Talk about how ice melts faster with heat or salt.

🌟 Extra Idea:

Add food colouring before freezing to make colourful ice blocks.

Tomorrow you’ll need:

Paints (poster or finger), brushes, paper, table covering, and aprons.
