Miniature Garden in a Jar!
🪴 Supplies You’ll Need:
A clear glass container (jar, vase, fishbowl, or even a mason jar)
Small pebbles or gravel (for drainage)
Activated charcoal (helps prevent odours and mould—optional but recommended)
Potting soil
Small plants (look for low-maintenance ones like moss, succulents, air plants, or ferns)
Decorations (tiny figurines, rocks, shells, etc.—optional)
Spoon or small trowel
🧪 Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Add Drainage Layer
Place 1–2 inches of pebbles or gravel in the bottom of the jar. This helps prevent soggy soil and root rot.
2. Sprinkle in Activated Charcoal
Add a thin layer (about ½ inch) of activated charcoal on top of the pebbles to keep your terrarium fresh and mold-free.
3. Add Potting Soil
Pour in 2–3 inches of potting soil, enough to cover the plant roots. Pat it down gently but don’t pack it too tightly.
4. Plant Your Greens
Dig small holes and gently place your plants inside. Tuck in the soil around the roots. Arrange them however you like—get creative!
5. Decorate (Optional)
Add little extras like polished stones, fairy garden pieces, toy dinosaurs, or seashells for fun.
6. Water Lightly
Use a spray bottle or a spoon to lightly water the soil. Don't overdo it—especially for succulents. The soil should be damp, not soggy.
7. Place & Enjoy!
Set your terrarium in a bright, indirect light (not direct sun). Mist occasionally and trim any overgrown plants.
🌱 Tips for Success:
Use closed containers for humidity-loving plants like moss and ferns.
Use open containers for succulents or cacti.
Keep an eye out for mold or drooping leaves—adjust watering or light if needed.
Great as a teaching moment: explain ecosystems, water cycles, and plant care!
